Dinosaur Books for Preschool

dinosaur books for preschool recommendations

Librarians always know about the hidden gems and these dinosaur books for preschoolers were recommended by our local librarian.

Dinosaur Parade

Dinosaur Parade by Shari Helburn is a sweet book that introduces you and your child to all the different types of dinosaurs. It’s also a wonderful way to talk about diversity both among humans and dinosaurs because the little boy in the story talks about the various features different dinosaurs have just like us humans. And of course, the little boy loves all his dinosaurs in spite of all their differences.

This is a great book for all readers and can be used to teach and celebrate our differences.

Duck, Duck, Dinosaur

Duck, Duck, Dinosaur and the Noise at Nightby Kallie George is the sequel to Duck, Duck, Dinosaur (which we have not read). It’s about two ducks and a dinosaur who grew up as siblings and they are going to spend their first night in their own nest, away from mama duck. Duck, Duck, and Dinosaur are feeling really brave and fall asleep in their own nest until they hear, “Groorre.” Totally afraid and wide awake, they seek out the sound.

This is a great book for all readers with a funny ending.

Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs

Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs retold by Mo Williams is the book that our wonderful librarian suggested! It is an awesome book and easily my favorite of the whole bunch!

Your kids will enjoy the story, but you will LOVE all the little nuances that tie it to the original fairy tale Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

This book is a little longer and it leads to some great conversations about the similarities and differences between this story and the classic fairy tale.

How Do Dinosaurs Say I Love You

How Do Dinosaurs Say I Love You? by Jane Yolen and Mark Teague is part of the How Do Dinosaurs series which we LOVE!!! This book describes typical toddler behaviors that frustrate all of us like fussing with their food and refusing their nap followed by the sweet little things our kids do that makes parenting so worth it. It is a great way to show your kids the behaviors that demonstrate love and care and a great reminder to us parents that the tantrums are followed by sweet hugs and, “I love you’s.”

Dinosaurumpus!

Dinosaurumpus! by Tony Mitton is a fun book about a big ol’ dinosaur dance party! The pictures are fun and the text will have you tongue tied. And in the end, you will just want to dance. This book is also great for introducing you and your preschooler to the different dinosaurs and their characteristics.

This is a great book for kids of all ages as it makes you feel good and puts you in a fun mood.

Dino Pets

Dino Pets by Lynn Plourde is about a little kid who gets a pet dinosaur. The first pet dinosaur he gets is the biggest dinosaur he could find, but the biggest dinosaur doesn’t fit in his house so he has to get a new pet dinosaur. This sort of problem happens every time he gets a pet dinosaur whether they be too fast, too scary, or too big.

The rhyming and tempo of this book make for a fun read and at the end of the book, there are some dinosaur facts so your child can learn about the biggest, fastest, longest, softest, smallest, and scariest dinosaurs.
