Homemade Apple Pie Recipe: A Thanksgiving Favorite

Every Thanksgiving, I make two homemade apple pies—one for my family and one for Eric’s family. They’re so good that both sides always end up arguing over who gets the other pie’s leftovers! It’s become a fun little rivalry, but hey, that’s what happens when you bake a pie that’s this delicious.

Here’s how I make my family-favorite apple pie that brings everyone back for more:

Apple Pie

Ingredients

For the Pie:

  • 1 (9-inch) pastry for a double-crust pie (homemade, frozen, or refrigerated)
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Dash of salt
  • 3 1/2 cups peeled and chopped cooking apples
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 (8-ounce) jar applesauce

For the Crunch Topping:

Directions

Step 1: Preheat the Oven

  • Preheat your oven to 425°F. While the oven heats up, prep your pie crust.

Step 2: Line the Pie Pan

  • Take half of your pie dough and roll it out to fit your 9-inch pie pan. Gently line the pan with the dough, allowing the edges to hang slightly over the rim.

Step 3: Prepare the Apple Filling

  • In a medium-sized bowl, toss the peeled and chopped apples with 1 tablespoon of lemon juice to keep them fresh and vibrant.
  • In a small bowl, mix together the sugar, flour, cinnamon, and salt. Pour this mixture over the apples and toss until evenly coated. Stir in the applesauce for that extra sweet and tangy flavor.
  • Spoon the apple mixture into the pie pan and dot the top with small pieces of butter.

Step 4: Create the Lattice Crust

  • Roll out the remaining dough and cut it into strips. Arrange half of the strips across the pie, leaving space between each one. Then, take the remaining strips and weave them over and under the first set to create a lattice pattern.

Step 5: Make the Crunch Topping

  • In a small bowl, combine 3 tablespoons of flour, 1 tablespoon of sugar, and a dash of salt. Using a fork, cut in the room temperature butter until the mixture is crumbly. Sprinkle this crunchy topping over the lattice crust.

Step 6: Bake the Pie

  • Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake for 10 minutes at 425°F. After 10 minutes, reduce the heat to 350°F and continue baking for about 45 minutes, or until the crust and topping are golden brown.

Step 7: Protect the Crust (Optional)

  • To keep the edges of your pie crust from browning too quickly, you can use a foil ring around the edge of the pie while it bakes.

Step 8: Cool & Serve

  • Once the pie is golden and bubbly, remove it from the oven and let it cool for a bit before slicing. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for the ultimate dessert experience!

Apple Pie Ice Cream

For a fun twist on classic desserts, try making apple pie ice cream! Using a stand mixer with the paddle attachment, mix together a few scoops of vanilla ice cream with 2–3 slices of apple pie. The pie adds chunks of spiced apples and flaky crust, creating a creamy, delicious treat that’s perfect for the holidays or any time you’re craving something sweet and indulgent. It’s the best of both worlds in one scoop
