Reagan and I are doing another girl’s night in! This time we are painting doormats. This is a craft that I have seen many times online and I have been wanting to try. I’m not sure why it took me so long.
If you know me, you know that my girl’s night follows a basic formula.
Craft + treats + mocktails
To go with our doormat painting we had vanilla cherry iced oatmeal cookies and flavored lemonades (cherry, blackberry, and peach – YUM!). They were heaven and pure nostalgia. I have to share the recipes with you.
But first the doormats.
Supplies:
- Plain Doormats
- Acrylic Paints
- Sponge paint brushes
- Round makeup sponges
- Painter’s Tape
- Waterproof Spray
Directions
Step 1: Choosing a Design
Since I didn’t find a stencil that I loved, I searched Pinterest for inspiration. I focused on designs that used basic shapes, making them easy to recreate. I debated between a citrus pattern and cherries because I found round dabbers that would make perfectly shaped circles. Eventually, I also incorporated a “hello” stencil to add a welcoming touch.
Step 2: Prepping the Doormat
Lay your plain doormat on a covered surface to protect against spills. If your design requires sectioning, use painter’s tape to mark off areas. My daughter, Reagan, opted for a mosaic approach by taping off sections and painting each one a different color. I was so impressed with how it turned out!
Step 3: Painting the Design
Painting the doormat requires more effort than expected because the thick fibers absorb a lot of paint. To get the best results:
- Use a generous amount of paint.
- Apply multiple coats for even coverage.
- Dab the paint onto the surface rather than brushing it to prevent bleeding under the stencil.
Step 4: Sealing the Doormat
Once your design is completely dry, spray the entire doormat with a waterproof sealant. This step is essential for longevity, especially if your mat will be exposed to outdoor elements.
Step 5: Enjoy or Gift!
After sealing, place your new custom doormat at your front door and admire your handiwork! If you’re hosting a craft night with friends, consider keeping all the mats, sealing them yourself, and delivering them as a thoughtful surprise.
Now, every time you step onto your doormat, you’ll be reminded of the creativity and effort you put into making something uniquely yours!
